2019 Durand Cup: Gokulam Kerala FC beats Mohun Bagan

Gokulam Kerala FC won Durand Cup 2019 football tournament by beating Mohun Bagan in final held at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. Gokulam Kerala FC beat Mohun Bagan with 2-1 as captain Marcus Joseph scored a goal in each half to lead his side to Durand Cup glory. This was Gokulam Kerala FC’s debut season.

Key Highlights

With this win the Gokulam Kerala FC becomes 2nd club from Kerala to win the crown after 22 years. In 1997, the I.M. Vijayan-led FC Kochin was 1st kerela club to claim title.

Marcus Joseph scored his 10th and 11th goal of tournament to help Gokulam Kerala FC win.

Durand Cup or Durand Football Tournament is a football competition in India. It was founded in 1888 (131 years ago).

It is Asia’s oldest football tournament and 3rd oldest football tournament in world.

It is co-hosted by Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) and Osians.

Durand Cup 2019 was 129th edition of Durand Cup.

The United States of America (USA) won FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 title after beating Netherlands in final at Lyon, France. US won with 2-0 goals scored by from Megan Rapinoe penalty and Rose Lavelle.

US retained the women’s World Cup title with help of penalty scored by Megan Rapinoe and strike by Rose Lavelle that gave holders a 2-0 victory.

The victory underlines USA’s status as dominant force in international women’s football as they claim World Cup title for 4th time (earlier 1991, 1999 and 2015) in 8 editions.

US were already the 1st team to appear in 3 consecutive finals. Also Coach Jill Ellis becomes 1st coach to win back-to-back World Cups in men’s or women’s game since Italy’s Vittorio Pozzo in 1930s.

USA was the only non-European team to make it to quarter-finals in France.

Megan Rapinoe: She won the Golden Boot after finishing with 6 goals and 3 assists, and she also took Golden Ball award for best player of tournament.
