President Ramnath Kovind conferred the Gallantry Awards and the Distinguished Service Decorations as part of the Defence Investiture Ceremony- 2019 to Armed Forces Personnel for displaying conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion to duty at a solemn ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Among the recipients are Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, who was presented the Param Vishisht Seva Medal; Major Tushar Gauba, who was awarded the Kirti Chakra and Vice Admiral Sunil Anand, who was given the Nao Sena Medal, among others.
Gallantry Awards in India
The government of India constituted Gallantry Awards on 26th January 1950 and were deemed to have effect from the 15th August 1947. Further, on 4th January 1952, three more Gallantry Awards i.e. the Ashoka Chakra Class-I, the Ashoka Chakra Class-II and the Ashoka Chakra Class-III were instituted by the Government of India on 4th January 1952. These awards were renamed as the Ashoka Chakra, the Kirti Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra respectively in January 1967.
Order of precedence of the Gallantry awards is the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra. Gallantry Awards are announced twice in India on the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day.

India’s highest peacetime gallantry honour, Ashoka Chakra was awarded to Lance Naik Nazir Wani posthumously. The award was presented by President Ram Nath Kovind was received by Wani’s wife and mother at the Republic Day celebrations held at Rajpath. Lance Naik Nazir Wani also holds the distinction of being the first Kashmiri to be conferred the Ashoka Chakra.
Lance Naik Nazir Wani sacrificed his life fighting the terrorists
Lance Naik Nazir Wani single-handedly killed two terrorists during the Shopian operation and injured a third one despite receiving serious injuries.
Lance Naik Nazir Wani prevented the escape of the terrorists from the target house. He made a huge contribution in neutralising six hardcore terrorists. In the process, he sacrificed his life.
Ashoka Chakra is India’s highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield and it is peacetime equivalent of Param Vir Chakra which is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice in the battlefield.
