At the Safaigiri 2019 organized by the India Today group, the Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was awarded “The most effective Swachhata Ambassador”. The former Indian Cricketer was chosen as he utilized his fame and popularity to ensure India achieved its goal of Swachh Bharat.
Mr Sachin was nominated as one of the ambassadors by PM Modi in 2014. He had launched Mission – 24 that aimed at improving the quality of Mumbai East ward as Mumbai was ranked the lowest in the Human Development Report.
It is an initiative of India Today group to celebrate the champions of Clean India campaign. The awards include cleanest village, cleanest religious place, cleanest railway station and cleanest city.
This is the fifth award function organized by the group. The award function ended with an address delivered by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Swachh Mahotsav 2019 was held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on 6 September 2019. The function was organised by Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. On this occasion, President of India Ram Nath Kovind presented the Swachh Bharat Awards in various categories for outstanding contribution to Swachh Bharat Mission.
On the occasion of Swachh Mahotsav 2019, Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat formally released ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’s Book on Behavior Change Communication’. The book was received by President Ram Nath Kovind.
President Kovind described cleanliness as pathway to success and highlighted that construction of toilets across country under Swachh Bharat Mission has become peoples’ campaign and not just a government campaign and at the same time helped in maintaining dignity of women as well as their empowerment.
President highlighted that cleanliness is also an essential condition for success of ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ launched by government in 2019.
About Swachh Bharat Awards 2019
Best Swachh Iconic Place award: was awarded to Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in Jammu and Kashmir. The Shrine was selected on basis of overall improvement in sanitation.
Swachh Award in Swachhta Action Plan category: awarded to Ministry of Railways.
Swachhta Pakhwada Award: was given to Department of Defence.
Power Grid Corporation received award in category of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for its contribution to Swachh Bharat Kosh.
Award for Open Defecation Free (ODF) and Behavior Change: were given to Gujarat and Sikkim
Ganga Gram: Village Baghori in Uttarkashi
Swachh Bharat Summer Internship: 1st prize was given to Ranjitha S for NCC, Bharatiya Shaheed Sainik School (Nainital) for NSS, and Vision Youth Association (Anantapuramu in Andhra Pradesh) for Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS)
