Union Ministry of Civil Aviation organised country’s first ever helicopter summit at Sahastradhara helidrome in Dehradun, capital of Uttarakhand. The summit was based on theme of expanding connectivity through helicopters.
Key Highlights of Summit
Organiser: The first-of-its-kind conclave, a Helicopter Summit- 2019 was organised jointly by Civil Aviation Ministry, Uttarakhand government and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI).
Indian Air Force (IAF) was also invited at the summit to talk on ‘Role of IAF helicopters in MEDEVAC i.e. medical evacuation at National level‘.
Participants: The conclave was attended by Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat, Aviation Secretary P S Kharola, Joint Secretary in Aviation Ministry Usha Padhee, officials of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), state’s Chief Secretary and officials from all Indian helicopter operators were present.
Incentives announced: Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat announced that aviation firms offering helicopter services in areas identified under UDAN Yojana (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), a Regional Connectivity Scheme will get an additional subsidy from Uttarakhand government in addition to the subsidy given by the Centre.
Significance: Considering geographical situation of Uttarakhand, helicopter services are very important for state as it may take up to 20 hours to reach border areas. As border areas of Uttarakhand were endowed with great scenic beauty the helicopter services will also make it easier for filmmakers to shoot their films in picturesque locations of state, which has emerged as one of country’s finest film shooting destinations in recent years.

Former RSS pracharak and Uttarakhand BJP chief and Trivendra Singh Rawat (56) was sworn in as ninth Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.
He was administered oath to office and secrecy by Governor Krishan Kant Paul at oath taking ceremony held in Parade ground of Dehradun. Besides, him seven Cabinet Minister and two Minister of State (MoS) also took oath.
About Trivendra Singh Rawat
- He was born in December 1960 in the village of Khairasain in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand (formerly in Uttar Pradesh).
- He had oined the right-wing organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), ideological parent of BJP in 1979. He became its pracharak for the Dehradun region in 1985 and subsequently joined the BJP.
- He was elected from Doiwala in the State’s first legislative assembly elections in 2002 and later in 2007 and 2017. He had served as the State’s Minister of Agriculture from 2007 to 2012.
Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) had won the 2017 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election by winning 57 seats of the total 70 seats with record vote share of 46.5%. Indian National Congress (INC) had won 11 seats and Independents won 2 seats. The election was held on 15 February 2017 in a single phase for 69 seats except Karnaprayag with saw voter turnout 65.64%.
Note: This is for fifth time BJP has formed government in Uttarakhand. The party formed its first government in the state when it was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in 2000, with Nityanand Swami as the first Chief Minister.
